For those of you who are unfamiliar with this amazing breed of dog, feel free to browse and learn. This is a special breed all on its own. Ancient and majestic, a bold protector of your family, property, and livestock.
But I will leave that for later pages.
We are the DeJongs. Willy and I (Jane) along with our five children live on a 100 acre cattle farm where we have been working the family farm together for the past 21 years. The days are long and tiresome, but the life is good, and we would not trade it for the world. But as everyone knows, you can't have a farm, without a dog! We bought our first Kuvasz 10 years ago, simply because they were beautiful to look at. We had no idea that this dog would end up being the most amazing animal we had ever had the pleasure of owning.
Those of you who live on a farm can understand the need for protection. In this day and age, we are easy targets for predators of all sizes. It is not unusual to come home to find your farm shop has been broken into, or your gas tanks have been drained. I have even heard of trailers pulling in and loading livestock out of the barn or field. Yes we are targets just as easy as our urban friends. But we are probably easier to rob, because our neighbors are not close enough to notice any unusual behavior.
We do not only have to deal with two legged predators, but the four legged variety also. Coyote, fox, wolves, elk, moose, deer, raccoon, skunk, groundhog, etc...all play a vital part in damaging crops, and killing livestock. With each passing year, the statistics get worse. There is a solution to the problem, and it is found in the Kuvasz.
Since we brought home our first Kuvasz, we have rested easy, knowing she was outside our door, watching the property and listening for wildlfe in the fields. Here you will find stories of the dogs and their instincts. Tales that will impress you. Not a day goes by, that I am not amazed by another antic of the dogs.
I hope you enjoy your time here, learning about these wonderful animals. If their beauty is not enough to convince you that they are the ultimate dog, then their personality, disposition, courage, and kindness should be.
