Hypoallergenic?? Really??
Please understand that every person who is allergic to animals is very unique. While some cases may be mild, others may become extremely sick. I am only stating that we have had NO adverse effects exposing our dogs to people with allergies. This may not be the case with everyone. I strongly recommend if your child or any member of your family is allergic to animals, they visit the farm and expose themselves as much as possible before making the choice to take home a pup. We certainly do not want any hearts broken when a child has to part with their dog because of an allergy. Better to be on the safe side and check it out first ! Then you are absolutely sure, its the dog for you !

HYPOALLERGENIC or NON ALLERGIC... which is politically correct?
This is a topic I have pondered off and on for the past 15 years. I really can't remember exactly how it started, but I clearly remember my first test case. A lady from the Toronto area called me and was interested in a kuvasz puppy...she had read about the gentle guardian characteristics and the family loyalty, etc. She was getting nervous because the neighborhood where sshe had raised her family was not so nice anymore, and her two teenage daughters were home alone for a while after school, before mom and dad got home. She wondered if a kuvasz would make a good family pet and bond with everyone (especially her two daughters), and also protect them in a gentle way. Her next comment was that one of them was quite allergic to dogs, and something about Kuvasz being Non- allergenic. I don't remember my answer, but the whole family came to visit, patted all the dogs, hugged them, and got covered with kuvasz hair. The mom was very excited that her daughter had absolutely NO reaction. So they did purchase a puppy, and he was perfect for their family...now 15 years later (to make a long story short) they are ready for another kuvasz puppy.
Anyway, since then, I have had numerous families purchase a puppy from me, for this exact reason... their kids were allergic to most dogs and they were looking for a large breed that was hypoallergenic. All of these families came to visit me and tested their children to make sure there was no reaction.
So, I have always wondered how we get "Kuvasz" on the list of breeds that are hypoallergenic? Many of these families told me that they searched on the Internet for breeds that are non-allergentic and that kuvasz are not ther. I've done a bit of reading lately... if you google with the words "hypo-allergenic dog breeds", then you get all kinds of web sites. A lot of them seem to say that NO DOG IS 100 % NON ALLERGENIC, BUT SOME DOGS ARE BASICALLY "LOW-ALLERGY."
Anyway, I've never really advertised this aspect of our breed until I was at the International Plowing Match last year in September... we had three kuvaszok there, and I put a sign out front saying not worry, that these dogs are hypoallergenic. Well, what a response! I have sold several puppies, and have some orders for puppies...again because people were looking for a large breed (with a gentle protective nature) that wouldn't make their children break out in itchy hives ( see next story called Hypo-Allergenic Auggie).
Another thing I have learned from my experiences (which has now been confirmed from reading various web sites) is that some people do not have any reaction to the kuvasz hair, but they do react if they get licked by the dog. I saw this first hand a few weeks ago when a family came to see my dogs. Their little boy had no reaction to the hair at all, but then as soon as my dog licked him on the face, he broke out in hives very quickly, and had to take some Benadryl.
I am not allergic to anything, so I find it interesting to learn about this. And if you talk to any doctors, they will say how things have just exploded with the amount of people that have allergies these days, compared to years ago (probably from all the toxins and chemicals we are putting into the envionment, but that's a whole other topic).
So, after pondering this subject for many years, I've decided that I'd like to make more people aware of this extra bonus you get when you purchase a kuvasz. I just recently placed an ad in a U.S. magazine, since they were featuring the Kuvasz. Well, I thought this would be a good time to advertise this unique feature about the breed. So, I sent the wording that I wanted to use and hypo-allergenic was one of those words...I was told that I can use the word "non-allergenic", rather than hypo-allergenic (not sure why, or if she was even correct...didn't have time to investigate further).

Thank-you Amber,
As Kuvasz owners, we know how wonderful this breed is, and the many amazing instincts and characterictics they have. Its wonderful to be able to add this tiltle to those qualities so ALL families can enjoy the companionship of the Kuvasz.

HYPOALLERGENIC AUGGIE
(Written by Vicki and Ken Stark and their three kids)
It was an exciting day last September when our family attended the International Plowing Match in Teeswater. Not just because the kids had a day off of school and it was a great day out together, but because of the "hypo-allergenic" sign displayed at the Kuvasz Club of Canada booth. The big white impressive looking dogs caught everyone's eye.
We have all been wanting a family dog to love for a long time, however, with one boy having allergies our options were walways limited. We knew it would be part of the family and would be allowed in the house. All of us agreed that we wanted a large breed and there was no guarantee that the popular poodle cross pups would not bother Bradleys allergies. No one would want to part with our puppy if we later found out it didn't work.
We live on a dairy farm outside Listowel, Ontario, have a growing coyote presence and last year were visited several times by gas thieves. Our reasons for wanting and needing a dog were increasing. Walking through the Plowing Match and coming across the KCC booth with its hypoallergenic sign definately had us all excited. Here was a breed that appeared to fill all the criteris we were now looking for in a dog. We couldn't help but start asking questions and placed our name on a waiting list for and available puppy. It all sounded great and all three children couldn't believe hat we were seriously considering one and they might finally have their dog.
As the Kuvasz did not come up on the Internet source as a non-allergenic breed during our research, we were admittedly skeptical. The only way to know for sure wa to expose our family to the dogs.
A visit to Huron Reg Huvaszok Kennels and meeting Amber and Rob's beautiful dogs convinced us to keep our name on the list for a puppy. We told Bradley everytime to get as close to the dogs as possible to make sure there wouldn't be any allergic reaction. Cezar and the others obilged no problem by welcoming all of us. Watching the children interact with the dogs was amazing. Their smiles said it all. Tracey sitting on the steps with Diamond was a perfect picture and Jeff was happy to soak up all the attention he could with these gentle guardians. We couldn't believe how friendly they all were.
Amber also suggested that we visit Jane and Willy DeJong's farm to see their dogs since they roam free like ours would. Again, we were totally impressed. Their dogs welcomed us, and again, no allergic reaction and it was a go for everyone. We are so thakful to Amber and Jane who answered so many of our questions on the phone and during our visits. But the dogs answered the most important question of all.
When Amber called to say she had a puppy for us, we were thrilled. We were anxious and curious, so we went to see the puppies (and their parents) when they were six weeks old. What a treat to see so many puppies. Twentyptwo (Huron's Real Winnder) the mother, had no problem with five strangers handling her pups. Two weeks later, Amber had our puppy ready to take home. We named him Auggie (Huron's Zulu), and he has been and important menber of our family for three weeks now. As expected and hoped for, there have been absolutely no signs of any allergic reaction. This is good news for Bradley because Tracey and Jeff decided that now he would have to go rather then the dog.
Thanks to the Kuvaszok, the 2008 IPM was definately the best Match we have ever visited.
